Who Remembers Their First Day Of School?

Mother daughter photo
Ella and her mum Peta.
Little Ella is about to start her first year of school.
Her first day is this week.
She’s so smart already and is bursting with excitement at the idea of having her own teacher and mixing it with a class full of new friends.
Peta, her mum, is a little anxious though.
First day of school means her little girl is growing up.
There will be new boys and girls to make friends with.
New parents and teachers who will get to know her and teach her and care for her.
New everything!
Ella’s world will be so much bigger than it was.
And all of this is fantastic for her… and for you, Peta!
I’ll be there on the morning of her very first day to take pictures as she heads out the door in her brand new school uniform.
“It’s going to be great Mum!” said Ella.
Yes. It will.

What Will You Wear Jeff?

Husbands and family photos
what to wear in family photos
Jeff Honsa and his boys like a good laugh.
“What should I wear for your photo session?” said Jeff
I told Jeff he should wear whatever he feels good in -and so he did!
Its a good idea to start with what you feel is really ‘you’ when your thinking about what to wear in photos.Family Photos
Don’t make people in your family wear clothes they have never worn before or don’t like.
Grumpy, uncomfortable people don’t look great in photos -very true you say!
Another good idea for family photos is for Mum to wear what she feels she looks her best in and the rest of the family co-ordinate with mum.
Let teenagers be teenagers I say. I would have no chance of making my teenagers wear something they didn’t like.
Jeff and his family will look back on their family photos in years to come and will have a laugh about his shirt.
“I’m Jeff and I like a good laugh!” it says.
I think it makes the photo even better.
Do you need a fun family portrait like this? Yes?
I can help you with that.

I’ll See You In The Afternoon!

family photos
family photos
The wonderful Jays family head for home after our photo session in Curlew Park.
You just can’t beat it! Late afternoon light does the most wonderful things in family photos.
Evening light is warm and vibrant.
It gives a glow to our skin and a golden highlight to hair.
Its a beautiful time of day to go to the park or a beach.
To be honest I just don’t do family photos at any other time of day.
There is a little window of time in the last half hour before sunset where the last light is just getting better and better and better -and then it’s gone.
There is nothing you can do to stop it, or slow it down. Its gone …until the next day!
Curlew Park, Sandgate, picture above and below, is one of my favourite places to be as the sun goes down.
My boy Kel and I go around there in the late afternoon. He takes a football. I take my camera.
I tell him how beautiful I think the park is at sunset. He says I say that every time we go.
We laugh and look at the big sky. We stay until the light has gone and until we can hardly see.
Until the mozzies start to eat us and the bats come.
I take pictures when the light has all but gone too.
Not family photos but something like this.

I could go every evening and every pic would be different.
That’s what makes it so awesome -I’m dealing with the power of the universe.
Do you need  beautiful family photos like this ?  Yes?
I can help you with that.

“You Can’t Tell Me What To Do!” Said Georgina

children photos

Little Georgina goes it alone on Sandgate foreshore.
It’s true! I’m never going to be able to get Georgina to do what I tell her to do for a photograph.
Toddlers are not going to be able to take direction. They just want to run around and play.
So  I let Georgina lead! Where she went, I followed.
It was a fun game to play with both of us running around on Sandgate foreshore in the late afternoon light.
We got heaps of great pics and a lot with her mum and dad too.
This one is one of my favourites though.

Please Tell Me You Have A Family Photo Like This! Yes?

family photos
family photos
Lewis Family. Owen, Wren, Corey and Amber
I really feel every family should have a family photo something like this one. Really I do.
Actually, a lot of people don’t!
It’s not easy because you have to get someone else to take the photo because a selfie is not going to cut it.
(I do like a good selfie though and they certainly have their place in family photos.)
And that person needs to know a little bit about cameras.
…and a little bit about natural light.
…and a little bit about getting people together for the photo so it doesn’t look too ‘posey’.
…and then they have to be really quick too to get the moment when Dad and Wren and Mum and Amber all look good and happy.
…and get the moment when Wren fell into the picture but she, and everyone else, was still looking great.
..and a whole lot more stuff I won’t go on with..
Do you have a beautiful, happy, family photo something like this ? No?
I can help you with that.

Do You Know What Your Kids Are Doing At School?

school photos

Anzac Day, St Patrick’s College
Once your kids are at school you don’t see them for a large part of every day.
Kids do awesome things at school.
They do sports days, plays on stage, get awards on assembly, do experiments with stuff, sing, dance, read weird books, write weird stories and at lunchtime they play crazily with each other…
…and we don’t get to see much of it at all.
Do you? No?
That’s the way it should be of course because kids go to school not just to learn how to read and write, but to meet and learn about new people.
People who are different.
People from other families that do things differently to our family.
People from  different countries, who speak other languages.
They get to meet new adults that aren’t their parents who do things differently to us – their mum and dad.
This is real learning. They are starting to think and learn by themselves.
Whoa! Independence!

Firsts Rugby Union at St Patricks College
If we as parents were hanging around at school with them they might not learn anywhere near as much of this important stuff.
So it’s right that we should let them go and learn all those ‘people’ things without us.
But because of this, most people don’t have many photos of their kids doing school stuff.
Do you? No?
Hang on!
Actually, there is a lot of weekend and evening and even holiday school stuff we can get to see.
When I think about it, I see you parents at school all the time, when I am there myself, watching school sport, turning up for special assemblies, evening performances, the school musical, the school formal, inauguration or graduation.

Of course, I spend a lot of time at school taking pictures of my boys doing all that stuff.
Check out this set of pics from St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe. My boys go there.

Dads Rock! Why Don’t You Want To Come Dad?

Husbands and family photos

Dad Darren and Amelia
Awesome afternoon of fun with our photography students Dads and kids. Watch the video here
DADS ROCK FUN PHOTO CLASS VIDEO
Lately, I have been feeling strongly that many families do not have great photos of Dad with the kids.
Listening to friends, they tell me that Dad is often the one who is reluctant to come along for a family photo session.
Do you agree?
Why is that?
Look at this pic of Darren and his daughter Amelia on a lovely afternoon on the beach.
Big love here!
A priceless picture in so many ways.
I love this pic and so does Darren.
But it was hard work getting Darren to come along to the family photo session in the first place.
Now, let’s be obvious,  if Darren doesn’t come, this photo does not exist!
So, why didn’t Darren want to come along?
Lisa, his wife, told me:
He won’t come because he thinks blokes don’t do family photos.
He won’t come because he thinks he’ll be sitting and posing awkwardly for ages for the photographer.
He won’t come because he thinks he’ll be getting dressed up in clothes he wouldn’t normally wear -or worse, dressed by ME!
He won’t come because he thinks the photos will be just like the other family photos you have -so what’s the point in paying for more.
So what did we do?
We showed him photos of other blokes having fun doing family photos. Like this one!
Husbands and family photos
Dad Cam and his family
We showed him outdoors photos of Dads not sitting but walking, running, and playing with their kids. Like this one!

We told him he could wear whatever he felt good in and showed him pics like this.

We showed him very special photos of  fathers and their kids that were so much more than snapshots.
Photos full of love and laughter.

John and Kate. Big laughs. Big Love.

“I can do that.” Darren said.
So he came along, wearing what he liked, and had great fun outdoors with the family while I took pictures.
And now we have this.

Darren and daughter Amelia share a moment of fun on Sandgate Beach
This year I am making a point of encouraging a lot more Dads, like Darren, to agree to come along for family photos with me.
In fact I have a plan for doing just this.
My next Fun Photo Class on Sandgate foreshore will be dedicated to teaching my students how to take great pics of Dads and kids together.
I will call it Dads Rock Fun Photo Class and I will be getting in a few real Dads and their kids so we will be taking real pics for real families.
Don’t worry! If your one of my students on the day I’ll show you what to do. Enormous fun!
So I will be recruiting students to take pics and also recruiting Dads and their kids for the afternoon.
My students and I will create some beautiful pics to give to our Dads and their families.

Fun Photo Class on Sandgate Foreshore
The really good pics taken by my photography students will be included in my photography exhibition in the Bluewater Festival Art Trail this year.
This Fun Photo Class will be free for students and Dads and kids who come along but there will be a limit on numbers attending.
So it’s fair, I will draw names, from all those who have been nominated, out of my Out n About hat.
I will let you know if you have been successful.

It will be on Saturday March 18 from 4pm because its low tide. Beautiful!

Put it in your Calendar now.
I have  created an event on my Facebook Out ‘n’ About page to let you know.
You can message me there too.
Who wants to come?
