You just can’t beat it! Late afternoon light does the most wonderful things in family photos.
Evening light is warm and vibrant.
It gives a glow to our skin and a golden highlight to hair.
Its a beautiful time of day to go to the park or a beach.
To be honest I just don’t do family photos at any other time of day.
There is a little window of time in the last half hour before sunset where the last light is just getting better and better and better -and then it’s gone.
There is nothing you can do to stop it, or slow it down. Its gone …until the next day!
Curlew Park, Sandgate, picture above and below, is one of my favourite places to be as the sun goes down.
My boy Kel and I go around there in the late afternoon. He takes a football. I take my camera.
I tell him how beautiful I think the park is at sunset. He says I say that every time we go.
We laugh and look at the big sky. We stay until the light has gone and until we can hardly see.
Until the mozzies start to eat us and the bats come.
I take pictures when the light has all but gone too.
Not family photos but something like this.
I could go every evening and every pic would be different.
That’s what makes it so awesome -I’m dealing with the power of the universe.
Do you need beautiful family photos like this ? Yes?
I can help you with that.

Once your kids are at school you don’t see them for a large part of every day.
Kids do awesome things at school.
They do sports days, plays on stage, get awards on assembly, do experiments with stuff, sing, dance, read weird books, write weird stories and at lunchtime they play crazily with each other…
…and we don’t get to see much of it at all.
Do you? No?
That’s the way it should be of course because kids go to school not just to learn how to read and write, but to meet and learn about new people.
People who are different.
People from other families that do things differently to our family.
People from different countries, who speak other languages.
They get to meet new adults that aren’t their parents who do things differently to us – their mum and dad.
This is real learning. They are starting to think and learn by themselves.
Whoa! Independence!
If we as parents were hanging around at school with them they might not learn anywhere near as much of this important stuff.
So it’s right that we should let them go and learn all those ‘people’ things without us.
But because of this, most people don’t have many photos of their kids doing school stuff.
Do you? No?
Hang on!
Actually, there is a lot of weekend and evening and even holiday school stuff we can get to see.
When I think about it, I see you parents at school all the time, when I am there myself, watching school sport, turning up for special assemblies, evening performances, the school musical, the school formal, inauguration or graduation.
Of course, I spend a lot of time at school taking pictures of my boys doing all that stuff.
Check out this set of pics from St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe. My boys go there.
