5 Secrets All Mums Need To Know About Looking Beautiful In Family Photos.

5 Secrets All Mums Need To Know About Looking Beautiful In Family Photos.

I know what you are thinking Mum!

You are thinking about all the photos you have seen of yourself before.
You are thinking of your favourite photos where you look great.
You are also thinking of photos you wish had never been taken or posted.
The ones you would delete forever if you got the chance.
You are thinking, “How can I look so great in one photo and so ‘eeek’ in another!”
Don’t worry! You are not the only one thinking that. We all do.
Everyone looks at themselves first in photos. We can all get pretty self-critical of our own image. Can’t we?
Why do we do that?
Human nature I’m afraid and there is not a lot we can do about that.
Or is there?
As a family photographer who has done dozens and dozens of family photo sessions I can share 5 secrets that will make you look great in family photos.
Are you ready Mum?

Secret 1 Wear what you know you look great in.

What to wear in a family photo can be a huge dilemma for you as a Mum.
Make the wrong choice about what you wear and your family photo will never see the light of day. Right?
There are so many options running through your head about this.
So let me simplify this for you.
Do not buy something new and don’t wear something you have never worn before.
Wear something you know makes you look and feel good.
I know you have something in mind straight away.
Go with this feeling.
Is it that pair of jeans?
Whatever it is -start with that -because of the way it makes you feel.
Build the rest of what you wear around it but never lose the feeling.
You may have doubts but don’t lose your nerve here.
Be strong. Be the real you!
And here is the best bit.
Tell everyone in your family to do the same.
The kids and your partner don’t want to be dressed by you.
Would you like it if they told you what to wear? No way!
No need to match anything.
That’s the secret!
If you feel good and confident in what you are wearing you will look that way in photos.

“How did you do that? You just took us for a gentle afternoon walk on the beach…and gave us the most wonderful family photos so full of love, beauty, tenderness and happiness.” Lisa Carey, Brisbane, Australia

Secret 2 Move!

Standing still for photos can make you feel awkward, uncomfortable and nervous.
If it’s a family photo session with a real photographer, well this makes you, and everyone else in the family, even more nervous…
..and of course that’s how you will look in your photos.
We don’t want that. So let’s get moving!
We were made to move.

It’s a great sight to see a family move together, like a herd, across the landscape.
Seriously though, when a family starts walking together the ‘awkwardness’ very quickly just disappears.
You and your family are now doing something instead of just standing there.
The kids start to laugh and joke around. You and the family start to look natural together in motion and this makes for great natural family photos.

Of course, if you are outdoors somewhere like a beach or a park it’s easy to just go for a walk and let your photographer keep in front of you to get all the action.
It’s great in the late afternoon when the light is perfect.
It’s a great time of day for a walk and also for photos.
So mum, keep moving with the family because you will have more fun and look natural together.
What’s next?

Secret 3 Connect with your family.

I have seen family photos where I look at the kids and the parents and think;
“It looks like these people don’t even know each other.
How can they be a family?”
They are a family, of course, but they are so nervous in front of the camera that they stop doing everything they would normally do together.
So, talk to each other. Look at each other. Laugh with each other.

Touch and hug, hold hands and chase each other around.
Be playful with each other and even push and shove each other around because that’s what families normally do. Don’t they?
Showing your togetherness as a family through touch and connection makes you and your family look natural and beautiful in photos.
Got that. That’s not too difficult you say.

Secret 4 Don’t worry! Be happy!

Sound easy Mum? Not always.
I know that it can be a big effort for you to get family photos done.
Let’s face it! Who else in the family is really going to do all the work that needs to be done to make family photos happen?
You need to find the right photographer. You need to find the right time and day when everyone can be together.
You need to deal with difficult children, reluctant husbands, unpredictable weather, postponements.
And, of course, on the day of the photo session itself you might seem to be fighting a world of anger, frustration and anxiety to make your photo session happen.
And all of those emotions can end up showing in your face in the photos.
Yes, I’ve seen photos where everyone looks great except Mum because of this.
Oh the injustice!
So, Mum, you must put all this aside and ‘enter the arena’ free of worries and ready to be happy and have fun with your family.
Let it all go. Don’t worry about anything. Be happy!

Can you do that?
Because if you can you will be rewarded with beautiful pics of you with your family.

“Best advice EVER! You told us to just have fun and be silly together as a couple and not to worry about the kids’ behaviour. We look so happy in the photos -we look like a couple of teenagers in love ourselves! I laugh and feel wonderful every time I look at these pics.” Corey and Owen Lewis, Coff’s Harbour

Secret 5 Forget about the photographer (me).

Finally, we are at our last secret.
Wouldn’t that be great if you could just forget about the photographer and be totally relaxed and enjoy yourself having fun on an afternoon walk with your family.
Because that’s when things really do get beautiful.
If you can move, be together and be happy and have fun with your family AND forget there is someone taking photos, then a good photographer can make you the most wonderful, tender, candid photos of you and the people you love and care about the most.

Pictures that you will make you smile, laugh and feel good inside every time you look at them.
Pictures that really say “We love each other. We are family!”

“Trying to get us all together seemed impossible… until it was almost too late. But you told us we could still ‘make it happen’.

“Then, it was like magic! You came to us, took our photos and that same evening, after dinner, we were all still together, laughing and looking at ourselves in the most fantastic family photos and sharing them with family on the other side of the world. Jeff was absolutely amazed at how good we all looked and keeps asking – “How did he do that?”

Kerrie Honsa, Narangba

Now that’s beautiful!

Is Cost Really The Most Important Factor?

Not surprisingly, the first question most people ask a photographer is actually the very last question they should ask.
It’s true—the first question I hear from almost everyone I speak to is, “How much do you charge?”
Now I’m not saying that the price is unimportant, far from it.
However, even if you’re on a budget (and who isn’t?), there are more important things to consider than just the cost, especially to begin with.
Finding the right photographer is not about looking for the cheapest or “shopping around”.
It’s about finding someone with whom you can relax and be yourselves, someone you can trust to deliver what they promise, and someone you believe will put their heart and soul into creating the beautiful portraits of your wedding.

What happens if things don’t go according to plan?

Is there a guarantee?
It’s the most important question you can ask.
There’s no margin for error when photographing a wedding, so your photographer has the responsibility of capturing your wedding day in real time, as it happens.
Obviously, the photographer can’t call you the next day, when you’re on your honeymoon, to ask if you can redo it all because the photographs didn’t turn out!
Therefore, you must protect yourself in the unlikely event that things don’t go the way you expected.
This is where a guarantee can alleviate any chance of anxiety.
Your photographer should proudly stand behind their work with a guarantee that makes sure you get the photography you deserve.
This is your WEDDING day—something you’ve planned for, looked forward to, and dreamed of for a long time. You deserve to have the comfort and peace of mind of an ironclad guarantee in the event that you aren’t 100% thrilled with your photographs.
How the photographer answers this question, and their tone of voice, are crucial.
If they don’t come right out and confidently tell you about their guarantee, if they mumble, hesitate, or offer something vague, then hang up the phone immediately and find someone else who will truly put their heart and soul into everything they do for you.
Never hire a photographer who doesn’t offer a 100% money-back guarantee, and make sure that the guarantee is IN WRITING when you hire them.

What happens if things don’t go according to plan?

Life is full of surprises, and while we do what we can to make sure everything is perfect, there’s always the remote chance that something can go off-script on the day of your event.
But what happens in the unlikely event that something does go wrong? Maybe you have to reschedule or cancel your photo shoot at the last minute, or perhaps the day isn’t right as you have staff who can’t be there and you need to change the plan.
When choosing your photographer, this is one of the most important questions you can ask because the answer will reveal a lot.
Obviously, no photographer can know in advance with 100% certainty that the photographs will all turn out perfectly.
Therefore, you must protect yourself in the unlikely event that things don’t go the way you expected—even if nothing major happens but you’re just not in love with the final results.
This is where a guarantee can alleviate any chance of anxiety.
Your photographer should proudly stand behind their work with a guarantee that makes sure you get the photography you deserve.
You deserve to have the comfort and peace of mind of an ironclad guarantee in the event that you aren’t 100% thrilled with your photographs.
Even the way the photographer answers this question and their tone of voice are crucial.
If they don’t come right out and confidently tell you about their guarantee, if they mumble, hesitate, or offer something vague, then hang up the phone immediately and find someone else who will truly put their heart and soul into everything they do for you.

“Paul, Thank you for capturing all the great moments of our Gatsby Night perfectly for us. You are a star!”        Luci Black,   Full Moon Hotel

Usually at an event such as this -or your event – I will come as ‘Paul, the cameraman with the hat’ as seen on my Sandgate Guide Page ‘Out and About with Photographer Paul Neil’.
As such, I like to see myself as working with the event organisers team and playing my part in making the event a great night and experience for everyone who attends.

I like to think of my role or ‘character’ as the ‘cameraman with the hat’ as part of the entertainment – a bit like a party paparazzi that everyone knows, trusts and likes, which enhances the evening for everyone.
I dress smartly, with vintage hat and jacket, but will be noticeable as a camera man ‘character’.
During the evening I will sweep around the event, approaching all groups, and request a photo in my normal polite and charming but confident and assertive manner.
It’s all a bit of fun and loads of laughs (hardly anyone ever feels they have been interrupted or says no). Before they know it I have their photo and I have moved on to the next group.
WiT Awards Event
“We would without hesitation recommend Paul as a photographer for any event.  He creates an instant and comfortable rapport which continues through the night with your guests.  He blends in with the crowd in a very unobtrusive way makes it feel like he is part of the party…loved having you there Paul!”
Lisa Cawthorne,   Operations Manager,  Women in Technology
Here is a link to my collection of photos taken for the Women in Technology (WiT) Awards Night and Gala Dinner at the Royal International Convention Centre at Brisbane Showgrounds.
I have included here the full set of 380 photos delivered to the WiT event organisers.
A small set was on social media within a day for all attendees and others to enjoy while everyone was still on a high from the fabulous event.
Many of these photos were excitedly shared by organisers, attendees, family and friends all over the world in the days following the awards evening.

One of my special skills is dance floor photos so if you have dancing at your event I will be out there boogeying with you and getting the best dance pics ever.

Who Would You Choose?

For example, consider two photographers:
  • Bob, who charges $50 for a session…
  • John, whose fee is $250 per session…
Bob sounds like a real bargain, right? I mean, why pay $250 when you might get the same thing for only $50?
Let’s take a deeper look, because appearances can be deceptive…
The first time you see Bob after your initial phone call is when he shows up late on the day. He got lost trying to find the location, and couldn’t remember your names—let alone your phone number. He’s already stressed out from the other two photo sessions before yours and he doesn’t seem very interested in you or your family. He calls the session over before any of you feel like you’ve had a chance to relax, and you end up waiting ages to receive the finished photographs. In the end it hasn’t been a very nice experience.
Not a great outcome, right?
John, on the other hand, takes the time to meet with you personally before ever booking the photography session, and plans out every detail of your photography with you. For example, you talk about the location and clothing choices, and he wants to know all about everyone who will be in the photographs. He’s polite and professional, photographs only your family on that day and is ready to present the finished images to you within a few days while the memories are still fresh in your minds.
By the way, these are real examples (just not their real names of course).
Ask yourself, which of these photographers you would honestly prefer to work with.
Finding the right photographer is not about looking for the cheapest or “shopping around”.
It’s about finding someone with whom you can relax and be yourselves, someone you can trust to deliver what they promise, and someone you believe will put their heart and soul into creating the beautiful portraits of your family.

This is your FAMILY—something more valuable to you than anything else.
Never hire a photographer who doesn’t offer a 100% money-back guarantee, and make sure that the guarantee is IN WRITING when you hire them.

Dance Like Nobody Is Watching!

Event Photography

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.”
Martha Graham

You’re absolutely right there Martha!
I have always loved the dance floor.
I want to be there on a crowded dance floor, singing along,  united with you and everyone else by that favourite song.
There is something wild and free about letting music and the moment take over and surrendering our bodies to the beat of a great dance song.
I get fantastic pics on the dance floor too.
With my camera in one hand I can keep the beat, boogie with you, and get the best pics of the night.
Event Photography
I have to be in the thick of it though.
Right there in the middle, dancing with you.
One minute I’ll be shimmying beside you and then, in a flash or two, I will have a pic of your best moves for all to see.
I have been doing a lot more event photography lately and when I am talking through the run sheet with the organiser for the night I always ask, “Will there be dancing?”
When we look later at dance floor pics without music we are amazed at what we look like -free, alive, and a bit crazy. I love it!

People who were there look at themselves in these pics and relive the joy of the moment. People who were not there will often wish they were.
Check out this set of pics from a fundraiser event at Saint Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe. See the change in vibe from the social pics at the beginning of the evening to the dance floor at the end.
St Pat’s Dance Through The Decades

Those Who Dance Are Considered Insane by Those Who Can’t Hear the Music

So next time you are at an event with a dance floor just get up and dance like nobody is watching.
I might be there beside you.

“Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance.”
Oprah Winfrey

Hey Diana, I Am Sorry About That Photo

Hey Diana,
You won’t remember me but I just wanted to say I am so sorry about a photo I took of you that I am pretty sure you would not have liked.
It was back in the mid 1990s and I was one of those hundreds of photographers that used to wait for you to turn up at a fundraiser event or a Royal Variety Performance.
We would all be in our enclosure and when you did arrive we would all call out your name to try to get you to look our way, and when you did, you would be struck by a thousand flashes of light and then you would be gone.
We would do it all again when you came back out to leave.
This night, as usual, my photos of you looked impersonal and, of course, exactly the same as all the others.
But it was YOU, and we all rushed  our pictures back to our newspapers or agencies to publish (no internet or email in the old film days so I took the Tube).
My picture editor came to see me soon after to let me know that one of my pictures of you was going to be ‘syndicated’.
I had to ask what that meant and he said my photo would be sent immediately, with a story, to publishers in 25 different countries around the world for use in magazines and newspapers.
I was amazed and of course asked which picture they would use.
He showed me this pic…
and this article to go with it…

The Thigh’s The Limit For Princess Di

Princess Diana shows a glimpse of glamorous thigh as she steps into a limousine after a charity dinner.

The Princess of Wales had just attended a posh fund raiser for an old people’s charity held at the prestigious Hilton Hotel in London.

As she stepped into her chauffeur driven car, her dress rode up to give photographers a sight of sexy leg.

Dreadful! Isn’t it?
I can laugh about it now but can only say that I am sorry about this.
It’s just a bad photo in every way but especially in the way it was used.
I want you to know that I will never let my photos be misused in this way again.
It’s very important to me that when I photograph people now, I show them at their best.
I often look at these photos of you taken by your friend Mario Testino and wish I had taken them.
You look so happy and relaxed.
You must have liked and trusted Mario to let your guard down like that and let him see the real you.
They are beautiful, wonderful pics of you.
Anyway, just letting you know I don’t do the media pack any more.
I work alone as a photographer but always with people and keep one of your pics (one of Mario’s here -not mine) to guide me.
I look for moments of vibrance, love and laughter in people.
I make pictures of that.
I know you’re not around anymore but I’m hoping you’ll still get this.
Warm regards,
Paul

Kookie. A Story Without Pictures?

Kel is kind to animals.
When he was 8 he found an injured kookaburra on the front lawn of our house.
It was being swooped, attacked and pecked by a half a dozen magpies.
He came in to get me and with our arms waving and much noise we shooed the magpies away.
But each time we went away the magpies returned to the kill.
I told Kel we would have to bring the kookaburra into our house to protect it from its tormentors.
“He’ll try to bite you. Won’t he?” said Kel
I told Kel I didn’t know what would happen.
I threw an old towel over the kookaburra, picked him up carefully and brought him into our house.
There was no struggle.
Kel made our small, outside laundry into a comfortable room for our injured guest to rest safely. He covered the washing machine with a sheet and put newspaper in a cardboard box to make a nest. He kept half the laundry stable door closed to stop predators getting in.
The bird had a lame wing and one eye missing but he kept his one good eye on us at all times.
Kel named the bird Kookie.
“What will he eat?” said Kel
I told him I didn’t know but we tried bacon and Kookie loved it.
Kel put a small plate near the nest box and we checked on Kookie, and brought him bacon, regularly.
A neighbour told me there was a native animal rescue centre at a sanctuary not far away. I told Kel that Kookie would stay the night with us and we could take him to the sanctuary the next morning.
“They will know what’s best for him.” I said.
Before nightfall Kel was thrilled to find Kookie would take bacon pieces off his palm.
“Can we keep him?” said Kel
I told him we really didn’t know how to look after a kookaburra.
“They’re wild animals. They’re not meant to live with humans.”
In the morning we fed Kookie quite a lot of bacon for breakfast.  He let us put him back in his box which we covered with a towel. Kel got in the car and with Kookie’s box on his lap we drove carefully to the animal sanctuary.
At the sanctuary there was a guy and a girl at the front desk in park ranger outfits who smiled and thanked us for doing the right thing. We said goodbye to Kookie and handed him over to them. They gave us back the towel.
Later that afternoon we went for a swim at the beach and I asked Kel if he would like to drop in to see how Kookie was going. He said he would, so we drove back to the sanctuary.
When we asked at the desk how Kookie was going the ranger guy told us that, sadly, Kookie had been put to sleep.
He said, “A bird with one eye can’t survive in the wild.”
I stood in shocked silence for a moment not really hearing anything else the man was saying.
I looked at Kel and he looked at me.
Shame. Failure.
We left without a word, my head full of feelings I had never felt before.
Some time later Kel said to me quietly, ” He could have lived with us.”
“Yes. He could have.” I said.
“If I had known, I would have done things differently.”
Kel is 15 now. Every now and then we still talk about what happened.
What we felt and what we learnt during our two days with Kookie still guides us in some ways.
Who would think that a kookaburra could give us so much.
Now wouldn’t it be great if I had a pic of Kookie to show you.
A picture of a significant event shared by Kel and I.
It would be great. Wouldn’t it?
Actually I do.
Kel keeps this pic in his room. So do I.
Want to see it?
Kookie and Kel

Caitlin Asked Harry To The Formal

Caitlin Asked Harry To The Formal

Caitlin asked Harry to her Senior Formal in this her final year at Clayfield College.
Caitlin and her best buddies Ella, Nicola, Annabel and Tahlia got together for a fun pre-formal at Tahlia’s house at Bridgeman Downs.
I was asked to take some beaut pics of the couples and their families in the afternoon before the limousines arrived.
It was blazing hot afternoon but all the kids and their families were troopers in the heat. The girls looked absolutely beautiful in their gorgeous evening dresses and Tahlia’s huge front yard was as good as any setting I could hope for.
All the girls were excited as they came out for their couples photos together.
Caitlin and Harry were first. Laughing and having fun with each other made for wonderful candid photos and despite the heat the afternoon light was beautiful.

Mum and Dad were there to see their daughter of course.
There were some lovely moments between Dad and his daughter.
The Dads were dressed in their best as well so it really was an occasion.
It was really my pleasure to photograph such fun and tenderness.

The Secret Wedding And The Wild Storm

The Secret Wedding And The Wild Storm
wedding photographer
Kristyn and Tom and their secret wedding.

I was thinking about Kristyn and Tom and their secret wedding again today.
I think about that evening all the time.
Images of what took place that night, both wonderful and terrifying, come into my mind even in my sleep.
I had better tell you the tale.
Their engagement party was to also be their wedding but no one was to know!
Stylish and spirited, Kristyn had her own ideas about what her wedding would be like.
“We’ll fill our house with our friends and family inviting them to our engagement party -but surprise everyone and get married right then and there.”
“We’ll have our mid-summer night garden wedding, in the glow of lantern and fairy light, in our own backyard.”
Secret preparations were made over months.
The universe though, had made other plans for Kristyn and Tom.
An enormous, deep purple, storm front had eerily darkened the city when I arrived in the late afternoon.
Guests looked skyward into the cloud mass. Black!
Or at the B.O.M weather website on their phones. Red!
This was to be a super storm cell.
The storm hung heavily overhead and then crashed to ground on our wedding .
Wild rain!
Plans changed and changed again as family and friends relocated from the yard carrying what they could to the deck and when the wind and rain came driving in sideways, they moved again to the shelter of the living rooms of the house.
In the lounge room were a bride, a groom and 100 guests who still did not know a wedding was about to take place.
Disaster?
No!
Not if you are Kristyn and Tom who see a massive thunder and lightning storm as a heaven sent sound and light show to celebrate their wedding day.
So chilled were they.
Thrilled with the extra excitement, while some around them lost their heads, they made their announcement to all from their dining room and were then whisked off by some not-so-surprised besties to their bedrooms to get into their wedding gear.
As the rain eased a little, the deck was again to be the scene for our wedding.
With Kristyn and Tom and party all ready the wedding began.
Here comes the bride.
No wait! Another storm cell. Howling wind and pelting rain.
Stop the wedding!
Tom, the celebrant, and all the guests, are driven off the deck and back inside.
Kristyn, who was half way down the hallway with her wedding party of brothers and nephews, must about face and scurry back to her bedroom dressing room.
The second storm eases and, although the full forces of nature are on display with wind, rain, thunder and lightning, nothing now will stop the marriage of Kristyn and Tom.
Together, despite the conditions, we regain the deck as ours.

As friends and family united, we surround our couple to protect them from the elements and watch as they are married.
There is a huge cheer and celebration as they kiss as husband and wife.
I take photos and watch as Kristyn, so vibrant and excited by life, whose wedding day ended up nothing like she dreamed it would be, is surrounded by her people -her Tom, her Mum, her brothers, John, her Gran, Uncle Wayne and all her beautiful girlfriends.
For Kristyn it’s been a wild and exciting day. She has dealt with chaos superbly.
We gather all the guests together for a photo.
No one who was there will forget this wedding
All is good.

They sign their wedding documents in their kitchen of course -where else!
