“We were able to choose the beach as our photo location -a place where we felt most comfortable as a family -the same beach where Ben proposed all those years ago. The candid photos are gorgeous – the ones where we were having so much fun we didn’t even know you were still taking photos. Such happiness! They are our favourites!” Kristine Kirk, Hemmant
There are many differences in styles of family photos to choose from. Here is some information that will help you determine which style will suit you best.
Lifestyle Photo-journalistic Photos
Lifestyle or Photo-journalistic Photography are very similar and it just means we have our photo session in a place where your family feels at home.
It could actually BE your home or somewhere else meaningful to your family.
Generally I will have a consultation with you and go over any locations that you and your family find special.
More often than not it’s in a natural setting such as a beach, park or an urban setting.
The most important thing is to choose a place where you and your family feel most comfortable.
Candid Photos
A candid picture is when a photo is taken when the subject is unaware or not expecting it to be taken.
This style simply captures a subject ‘as-is’ doing whatever they normally do.
Candid photos can also be taken during a lifestyle photo session. Sometimes the photos that are taken when you least expect it end up being your favourite ones.
Imagine I said to you, “I want you to go for a walk and have fun and be silly with one another just like you do any other day and forget that I’m even here”.
This is considered a form of candid photography because I didn’t pose you. I simply led you to a location and you did the rest.
Look at these lovely candid moments.
Traditional Photos
This type of photography has been in existence since cameras were first invented.
The aim is to show what each member of the family looks like.
The family is expected to be looking directly into the camera lens while the picture is being taken.
Here is a traditional portrait of my friends Tony and Leanne Druery and their kids.
Check out the lovely back lighting on the hair -I’m always looking for that .
Environmental Photos
An environmental portrait will focus on the relationship of the environment with their subject.
Here the connection a person has with an environment or place is more important than the need to show a persons face.
The environmental approach photographs their subject ‘doing their thing’ in their environment, whether at the park, at home, fishing or playing a sport.
Check out this great environmental portrait of Steve Kelly who likes nothing better than to go to Fraser Island and fish day and night.
Gorgeous late afternoon light and you can’t beat that Fraser Island background. That’s his family fishing behind him too.
Look at the joy on his face as he hooks on to a big one!
I love this photo and so does Steve.
There is no right or wrong option.
If you choose the style that best suits your personality, you’ll achieve the best results.
What is my style?
My style is a combination of lifestyle and candid photography with clean composition and beautiful light. My photographs show the personality of individuals and the loving relationships within families.
Paul you are amazing! You just took us for a gentle afternoon walk on the beach…and gave us the most wonderful family photos so full of love, beauty, tenderness and happiness. Deb Jays, Brisbane, Australia
